Trade Deadline
Trade Bait
Here we are again, sellers at the trade deadline. The deadline is now less than a month away, and it’s time to start looking at what the Mariners will be selling and what they might get in return.
First on the block: Jason Vargas
Vargas may be the biggest piece the M’s have to offer this trade season. Despite his respectable 4.31 ERA in 117 innings of work, his value isn’t as great as the stat line indicates. Safeco Field is the perfect conditions for a left-handed pitcher. Vargas lacks tremendous tools on the mound, but the spacious outfield at Safeco combined with the marine layer makes a perfect combo for him. Take a look at these splits.

While there is still value for Vargas, he would be a 4th or 5th starter on most playoff-bound teams, so the Mariners wouldn’t get more than bottom of the rotation value. A comparable trade could be the Jerrod Washburn deal in 2009 when the M’s sent him to Detroit for Luke French and Mauricio Robles. Vargas and Washburn share the similarities of being crafty lefties, but Vargas’ age and contract will raise his value a bit over Washburn’s. The Mariners would likely get one or two mid level prospects in return for Vargas on the market.
Next up: Kevin Millwood
Millwood has had a respectable season posting a 4.00 ERA in 83.1 innings of work, but teams trading for him would be getting no more than a 5th starter/long reliever and veteran presence in the locker room. This skill set can be valuable to a playoff ballclub. Still, I wouldn’t expect to get any more than a low-level prospect and maybe some cash. A Millwood trade would also open a rotation spot for quickly progressing prospect, Danny Hultzen who has three starts in AAA currently. If Seattle can get a decent offer for Millwood, I would expect them to accept considering they will have no use for him next year.
How about dealing Miguel Olivo?
Like Millwood, Olivo is a veteran presence, but he can also pitch in a little power. A team with a suspect catching situation may be interested in him to add some depth and pop at the position. The Rays, Angels, and Mets are a couple of playoff contenders that may be interested in a guy like Olivo. Again, Seattle wouldn’t get much in return, perhaps a minor prospect or two. John Jaso could probably get a bit more in return, but I don’t see the Mariners being willing to part with him.
Of Course, Brandon League
League is no stranger to trade rumors; his name has been mentioned for the last couple seasons. Unfortunately, his stock is at an all-time low due to his demotion from the closer role. Nevertheless, an organization with an unstable closing situation could still see him as a potential closer. It would be interesting to see what a team would sacrifice for League. Some teams may be willing to pay a typical price for a closer who is one year removed from an all-star year, and some teams may pay the price of an average reliever. I could see League fetching anything from a plus prospect to a low A pitcher.
Believe it or not: Chone Figgins
Yes, I said it, Chone Figgins has trade value. Very little value, but value nonetheless. An article from a while back
indicated that the Rangers might be interested in our disaster. There is a market for the pinch runner/utility man mold that Figgins fits, and I don’t think any Mariner fan would object to ridding themselves of the most hated man in the Mariner organization. The M’s would likely have to eat most of Figgins’ salary and get little in return, but if that’s what it takes to make sure he never wears a Mariner uniform again, then I wouldn’t hesitate.
Mike Carp and Casper Wells
Depending on the team, both of these players could be a 3rd or 4th outfielder or even a pinch hitter which is basically a position of its own in the national league considering that pitchers need to be pinch-hit for in late innings. One guy is a lefty, and the other a righty, but I could see teams showing interest in these two guys, especially Wells considering the year he is having.

Attack Of The Trade Polls
Ladies and Gentlemen.
As you may have noticed, we are approaching the halfway point in the season, and around this time every year the rumor mill starts to creak and churn. The Mariners have more than a few pieces to deal as they look to find just the right return to finally put this thing together for the 2013 season. The Mariners will look to be sellers, but instead of shooting for prospects several years out, the Mariners are going to look to acquire functioning, major league ready, talent.
With that, we have several polls that we desire your opinion on. Have a look and be sure to vote.

Trade Poll: Felix Hernandez
ve As the All-Star Break approaches, the rumor monster will awaken from its slumber. As the monster frantically spews it’s rumors across the baseball world, several Mariners are sure to be caught in the fanatical chaos.
Ah, the big kahuna. This has been a topic of dicussion the past couple of years, and figures to be a annual rite for the remainder of his time in Seattle. Should the Mariners trade Felix? Are the Mariners even considering it? Should they consider it? There are plenty of arguments to be made in favor of both sides. On the one hand you have one of the top 3 best pitchers in baseball, and it’s not as if those grow on trees. Felix is young, young enough to continue to grow with the youth movement and continue to contribute for plenty of years to come. On the other hand Felix is a rare trade piece, a piece that can bring in up to 3-4 elite players that you can insert into your organization and immediately contribute.
The decision will not be easy and I don’t envy the brain trust that is going to have to make the final “yes” or “no”. I have my own opinions on the matter, but how do you feel? Felix is not only one of the best pitchers in the game, but a cult like fan favorite. The Mariners will have more to deal with than just on the field repercussions.

Trade Poll: Ichiro
As the All-Star Break approaches, the rumor monster will awaken from its slumber. As the monster frantically spews it’s rumors across the baseball world, several Mariners are sure to be caught in the fanatical chaos.
Since 2001 all Mariners fans have known at the top of the lineup is Ichiro Suzuki. We have enjoyed year-in and year-out 200 hit seasons. We have witnessed a numerous awards and the breaking of records. But all of those occurrences are things of the past and the Ichiro of current is a shell of his former self. Looks don’t look to be on the up and up for the Japanese import either. The team is getting younger and younger, and as Ichiro’s production continues to slip, Wedge continues to find ways to get him out of the lineup. For the first time in several years, the Mariners may seriously be considering finding Ichiro a new home.
It would be incredibly hard to let go of what has been the face of the franchise for quite some time, but as the youth movement continues its stampede through Seattle, Ichiro could be aging his way off this team. Would you do it?
Could you do it?

Trade Poll: Kevin Millwood
As the All-Star Break approaches, the rumor monster will awaken from its slumber. As the monster frantically spews it’s rumors across the baseball world, several Mariners are sure to be caught in the fanatical chaos.
For many years Mariner fans have been begging the organization to bring in Millwood on an incentive laden deal. The Mariners finally complied and after a slow start, Millwood has turned out to be delightfully average. Veteran pitchers who can chew up innings are mildly sought after around the trade deadline, and with the Mariners so far removed from contention and plenty of younger options to insert into his empty rotation slot, Millwood figures to dangled out in front of potential buyers.
Considering how hard average pitchers have been to find, how do you feel about dealing Millwood?

Trade Poll: Brendan Ryan
As the All-Star Break approaches, the rumor monster will awaken from its slumber. As the monster frantically spews it’s rumors across the baseball world, several Mariners are sure to be caught in the fanatical chaos.
Brendan Ryan has been a bit of an enigma this season. Last year we saw an organization frustrated with Ryan’s helpless bat, trade him to the Seattle Mariners for a bag of balls. The Mariners saw this bat awaken, and reaped the benefits of a defensive star with an average bat. 2012 has been a different story for Ryan, who has struggled to find an sort of consistency at the plate. The defense has still remained elite, but the bat has many fans fatigued with Ryan.
With the continued emergence Nick Franklin, how do you feel about possibly moving Ryan?

If I Were “King” For A Day…
I don’t know who the Mariners plan on trading this season or if they even will move anyone. I’m sure we can speculate that Brandon League, Erik Bedard, Adam Kennedy could be moved, not to mention David Pauley, Jamey Wright or Jack Wilson if someone got desperate. Speaking of desperate, if a person were to buy into Aaron Laffey‘s ERA they could have him cheap. We don’t have a ton of great pieces but they are pieces non-the-less and there are teams that could make up some interesting partners if they needed outside
I’m not suggesting that the Mariners need to trade everyone but there are scenerios in which teams could approach us and offer more than what their value is to this organization. The idea is that they could pay cheaper for say a David Pauley 7th inning guy type guy than a Mike Adams or a Joel Hanrahan.
But there are some teams in need of infield help such as the Tigers, Pirates, Brewers, Diamond Backs, Giants and even the Cardinals. Where a Jack Wilson in the late innings or a Adam Kennedy off the bench could make sense.
There isn’t a team out there that doesn’t need bullpen help… well maybe the Braves. But, even the Yankees are looking for upgrades and you can throw the Tigers, Brewers, Dbacks, Giants and even the Rays in that category too. Brandon League at a cheap $2.25 mm, plus he’s on tap for next and likely won’t jump above $5 for his next pay increase. He could return a good piece.
Then there are teams all over the place that just need depth on the bench. A few guys to fill into a specific position. It happens every year and the Mariners are in a position with those pieces.
I started doing a long drawn out list of 8 – 12 different C+ prospects that could be interesting options going forward. It was fun to look at some of the different organizations under a microscope but to be honest I developed a few favorites of who I would go after if I played the GM. Then I thought I do my shadow draft each year (speaking of which I still need to do a write up on that but I’ll probably wait until August once the dust settles and we know where everyone sits.) why not do a quasi shadow trade deadline.
So I am calling it “If I were King for a day.”
