Seahawks Report Card

Another game, another loss. 3 in a row now. It’s getting tough to not just get completely frustrated with this team each week. I still believe that there’s plenty of talent on this team, but it’s just not showing at this point. Too much inexperience, and not enough coaching at this point to see results. Lets see what grades the Seahawks earned this week:

Tarvaris Jackson: D

Jackson was unmasked by Dallas on Sunday. He’s still a below average QB. He’s had a couple good games and had a bunch of people fooled into thinking he was legit, but he’s not. Even in his good games he still held onto the ball too long. He still had  inconsistent accuracy, and he still locked on to his primary receiver too often. Team just weren’t making him pay for it. This weekend, Dallas did.

Jackson is going to have games like this. He’s simply not good enough to avoid them for too long. (At least he’s not Whitehust)

Clink Gets High Marks In Stadium Review

As a member of the 12th Man, I tend to believe that Seattle is one of the best places to watch an NFL game. We have the loudest fans, a great outdoor setting, great facilities, everything that you could want except a winning team.

I’ve been to … [visit site to read more]

NFL Draft Update: Tight Ends

This class of Tight Ends lacks the top end talent, but make up for it with plenty of value in middle rounds. You wont find a Vernon David or Zach Miller in the draft this year, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t plenty of players who can do a lot to contribute on a good team.

Quick Thoughts on Seahawks/Cowboys

The Good:

Marshawn Lynch – 23 carries, 135 yards, 1 TD

Lynch had by far his best game this season, and probably his best as a Seahawk.  Because Lynch was so effective, the Seahawks … [visit site to read more]

Cowboys beat Seahawks 23-13

Another week, and another loss in a winnable game. The national medias take on this game was that Dallas was “too much” for the Seahawks, but I don’t buy it. These were surprisingly even teams. The only reason Dallas won was because Jackson threw 2 interceptions that were turned into 10 points. The Seahawks could have easily won this game.

These game notes are just my “gut reaction” to a game that I watches while very distracted by my family. I’ll watch the game again tonight on NFL rewind and my opinion might change drastically. I’m also clearly disappointed, so expect that to be reflected in my opinions of the game

Game Notes:

  • 10 more penalties. Seriously? Penalties are mostly about coaching and attention to detail. Carroll and company have to get their act together.
  • The “Tarvaris Jackson is the QB of the future” movement took a major step backwards this week. Jackson looked rattled at times, and clearly wasn’t seeing the field as well as he had in past games.  … [visit site to read more]

Seahawks Pre-Game Meal

Something to chew on during the game today… The Seattle Seahawks have made a case this season that total offensive yards has little to do with wins and losses. In both their wins this season, the Seahawks have been out gained by the opposing … [visit site to read more]

The Enigma of NFL Turnovers

There are so many cliches about turnovers in the NFL. “Win the turnover battle and you win the game.” “The game is decided by turnovers.” “If you turn the ball over, you’re going to lose.” Those are just a few, there are tons more. You hear them from the announcers during every single game. You hear them from the talking heads before and after every game.

What if I told you that turnovers, both takeaway and giveaways, have almost no correlations to wins and losses? You’d probably reply that I’m crazy. The belief that turnovers are huge factors in determining win and losses is so ingrained that we don’t even question it.

Take it one step further. Good teams take the away from other teams, and bad team tend to turn the ball over a lot. You agree with that, right? I’m just stating the obvious here. Except that I’m not. It turns out that in fact turnover are almost completely uncorrelated to winning. Check out this graph of the data from the last 10 years:

Check out that r-squared value. 0.184. Yikes. It doesn’t get much clearer than that. There simply isn’t any correlation between turnover differential and wins.  … [visit site to read more]

Penalties, Penalties, Penalties

In my last column, I discussed a key drive in the fourth quarter by the Cincinnati Bengals that resulted in a field goal to increase their lead to 20-12 over the Seahawks. It was a five play, 32 yard drive that took over four minutes. Cincinnati … [visit site to read more]

NFL TV Maps

For the first time all season, it seems the NFL finally got it right. It’s hard to complain with what games will be on TV on Sundays, given the options. Too bad it’s week 9 and it’s the first time we haven’t been force-fed a boring Titans game or some other non-sense while a really good game isn’t being shown in the Seattle area.

As always, I’ve got to give a huge shout out to the guys over at the506.com for putting these maps together.

Marshawn Lynch and Running Lanes

It’s something I’ve been noticing for few weeks now, and it became really apparent this last week against the Bangles. Marshawn Lynch is really slow getting to the hole. Any fan can see that the offensive line blocking for the run, but the line … [visit site to read more]

The Most Important Play

Sometimes, when you try to determine the most important play in a football game, the choice is obvious.  A key turnover or a game winning touchdown in the final seconds would certainly qualify.  However, sometimes the most important play is not so apparent.  This was the case in the Seahawks’ loss last Sunday to the Cincinnati Bengals.  The most important play in that game was a return, although it wasn’t the one you’re probably thinking of.

Brandon Tate’s 56 yard punt return for a touchdown was certainly a pivotal play.  It made the score 27-12 with 3:22 left in the game.  It definitely sealed the outcome, but it wasn’t the most important play in the game, in my opinion.  It was his previous return, on a kickoff, that had a greater influence on the outcome.

It happened at around the nine minute mark in the fourth quarter.  The Seahawks had just scored what would be their only touchdown of the game on a seven play, 84 yard drive.  Even though they failed on their two point conversion attempt, the score was 17-12 and momentum was on Seattle’s side.  The crowd was energized and ready to make some noise.  Then came the kickoff.  … [visit site to read more]

Fire Pete Carroll? No Way!

This morning, “the Mitch in the Morning” show on KJR crossed the line from being annoying to downright stupid. Mitch has always struggled with his grip on reality, but today’s rant was just stupid, even for him. How he can claim that Pete Carroll should be fired today, and not have every single person listening to him on their radio automatically change the station, is simply amazing to me.

I get some of the frustration with Carroll this week. He’s mismanaged some situations and made some very questionable choices (like going for it on 4th down with 12 seconds left in the first half last week instead of taking the FG) but to suggest that this is grounds for a complete organizational shakeup? seriously?

Keep in mind that Carroll is the VP of football operations, not just the coach. Firing Carroll means bringing in yet another person to run the organization. That person will want to hire their own GM too. There will be another major roster purge once that happens, and another year or 2 of guaranteed losing while the transition takes place.  … [visit site to read more]

Admitting That I Was Wrong

A little over a month ago, with the Seahawks stumbling as a team and looking like one that would be in the Andrew Luck sweepstakes than anything else. The defense had played well, but the offense had been really bad, especially QB Tarvaris Jackson.

It was at that time that I called for a QB change. It was time to try and see if Charlie Whitehurst could provide a spark. Jackson was hurting the team. He was holding on to the ball too long and taking needless sacks. He was refusing to throw the ball more than 3 yards down field, even on 3rd and 8. It wasn’t working.

At least I was smart enough realize that Whitehurst wasn’t going to be much better.  … [visit site to read more]
