Local product in training
"It's been a long road. I've been to Portland and Austin. Now I'm here and the coaching staff is letting me train a bit, which is nice. I'm hoping just to get some good training and if they need an extra player, I'm available. But if not, it's great training."
A fourth round pick in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft, Cox played six games for Real Salt Lake last season, scoring his only goal in a 3-1 loss to the Columbus Crew. He made his MLS debut in Seattle when the Sounders hosted Real Salt Lake and the season finished with RSL hoisting the MLS Cup at Qwest Field.
"I got my first appearance in Seattle and we ended the season with the championship here. Even though I didn't play, it was great to have it here with friends and family," Cox said, adding that he has his championship ring in a special place at home. "I've shown it to my friends and family, but no, I don't wear it."

Who Are Toronto FC?
Who are Toronto FC?
Toronto FC is in their fourth season in Major League Soccer after joining as the 13th team in the league and first from Canada. They play their games at BMO Field, which recently expanded to a 21,300-seat capacity and installed a natural grass playing surface. Last season, they won their first trophy, taking home the Nutrilite Canadian Cup - the Canadian equivalent to the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.
Coach: Toronto FC is headed by Predrag Radosavljevic - better known in the Northwest as former Tacoma Stars dynamo Preki. He is in his first season in Toronto after three seasons with Chivas USA, where he was 2007 MLS Coach of the Year and led the Los Angeles team to a 40-29-21 record. As a player, Preki enjoyed a stellar indoor career with the Tacoma Stars and St. Louis Storm from 1985-1992. Then he left to play for Everton and Portsmouth in England before ultimately making his return stateside in 1996 to play in MLS. He played all but one season of his MLS career with the Kansas City Wizards, where he amassed 71 goals and 2 MLS MVP awards.
Who to watch: Toronto is led by captain Dwayne De Rosario and designated player Julian de Guzman. De Rosario came to Toronto in 2009 after spending the first eight seasons of his MLS career with the same organization, moving with the San Jose Earthquakes to Houston when the franchise relocated in 2006. He had 11 goals and six assists for the Reds last year and already has four goals to his credit in 2010. De Guzman played for nine seasons in Germany and Spain - becoming the first Canadian to play in La Liga - before a mid-season move to Toronto FC last year. University of Washington product Ty Harden also features for Toronto FC on defense.
Records: Toronto is 1-3-0 in 2010 after finishing 10-11-9 in 2009 for their best record in franchise history. The Sounders lead the all-time head-to-head series 1-0-1 after a 2-0 win in Toronto and a 0-0 draw in Seattle in 2009.

Who are FC Dallas?
Who are FC Dallas?
FC Dallas is one of the original Major League Soccer teams, entering in the inaugural season in 1996. However, they were then called the Dallas Burn. They changed to FC Dallas before the 2005 season. They play their matches at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas, moving into the 20,500 seat stadium in 2005 as well. The club had been nicknamed the Hoops because of their horizontally striped jerseys, but the team has phased out the moniker over the last two years. The club’s only trophy came in 1997 when they won the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.
Coach: Schellas Hyndman is in his third season coaching FC Dallas after a successful career at the college level. Prior to entering MLS, Hyndman coached 33 seasons in college. He started with two seasons at Murray State University. Then, after a year in Brazil, was at the helm at Eastern Illinois University for seven seasons, compiling a 98-24-11 record. Finally, he spent 24 seasons with Southern Methodist University in Dallas, going 368-96-38. He joined FC Dallas midway through the 2008 season and has gone 15-19-16 as a coach in the professional ranks.
Who to watch: Forward Jeff Cunningham won his second career Golden Boot for leading the league in goals in 2009. He tallied 17 goals, 16 of which came after the midway point of the season, to bring his career tally to 122 goals in his 13 MLS seasons. Midfielder David Ferreira also commands a lot of attention. The diminutive playmaker is in his second season on loan from Brazilian side Atletico Paranaense. Goalkeeper Kevin Hartman joins the team after becoming the winningest goalkeeper in MLS history with 138 career victories with the LA Galaxy and Kansas City Wizards. Also, defender George John is in his second season out of the University of Washington.
Records: FC Dallas is 0-2-1 to start the 2010 MLS season after narrowly missing the playoffs in 2009 at 11-13-6. The Sounders FC hold a 1-0-1 record edge over Dallas in their two meetings in 2009.

SOUNDERS FC: Fucito scores in stoppage time to oust Wizards 1-0
Fucito bangs in his first MLS goal during stoppage time to break the scoreless tie. Jane Gershovich / NSSMichael Fucito only played nine minutes in Saturday’s match against the Western Conference leading Kansas City Wizards. By the end of his short time on the pitch, Fucito was strutting off the field to an ovation from the home crowd after scoring the lone goal in the 92nd minute to lead Seattle

Seattle Sports News Insider Player of the Week (04/18/10)

This week’s honor will go to Michael Fucito of the Sounders. Fucito scored the game winning goal in stoppage time to defeat the Kansas City Wizards 1-0. It was the Harvard grad’s first MLS goal and it was likely one of the biggest he will ever score. Brad Evans had a throw-in inside the Wizard’s half of the pitch and Fucito, being the intelligent Ivy-Leaguer he is, snuck behind the defense knowing that you can not be called off-side on a throw-in. The ball found Fucito one-on-one with the Wizard’s keeper Jimmy Nielsen and Fucito quickly fired a shot past Nielsen into the back of the net to seal the victory. The goal was very crucial and was followed by an eruption of about 35,000 screaming fans. Congratulations to Mike Fucito on his first MLS goal and go sounders!

Who Are The Kansas City Wizards?
Who Are The Kansas City Wizards?
The Kansas City Wizards are one of the original Major League Soccer teams. After playing their inaugural season in 1996 as the Kansas City Wiz, they changed their name to the Wizards in 1997 because of a trademark dispute. They play at Community America Ballpark in Kansas City, Kansas, but will move to Wizards Stadium Complex at Village West in 2011. The new location will also be in Kansas. The Wizards won the MLS Cup and Supporters’ Shield in 2000 behind Sounders FC technical director Chris Henderson and the US Open Cup in 2004.
The Coach: Kansas City is headed by Peter Vermes, who acted as technical director from 2006-2009 before taking over for the fired Curt Onalfo in August of last season. He finished the year at 3-7-2. His playing career saw stops in Hungary, Holland and Spain before he landed in MLS for the final seven years of his career. In addition to the 1988 US Soccer Athlete of the Year, Vermes was also MLS Defender of the Year in 2000.
Who To Watch: The Wizards are now stocked with talent after underperforming in 2009. With Davy Arnaud and Josh Wolff returning along with journeyman striker Kei Kamara, the Wizards have also added English midfielder Ryan Smith to their strike force. Behind captain and US National Team defender Jimmy Conrad is newcomer Jimmy Nielsen at goalkeeper. Nielsen has not allowed a goal in his first two MLS matches while Smith has a goal and two assists. Kamara leads the team with two goals.
Records: The Sounders FC and Wizards split two regular season meetings, with each team winning on the road. Seattle also topped Kansas City 1-0 in the US Open Cup quarterfinals. This season, the Wizards are 2-0-0 (6 points), while scoring five goals and allowing none.

More on stoppage time goals
On yesterday’s blog, I chronicled the remarkable success that the Sounders FC had in stoppage time throughout their inaugural season. With roughly 5% of the goals over the last several seasons being scored in second half stoppage time, it seemed pretty incredible that the Sounders were able to keep the ball out of the net after the clock read 90:00.
“We don’t stop playing,” goalkeeper Kasey Keller said. “We fight like hell to make sure that we keep a lead or keep a point.”
Head coach Sigi Schmid agrees, but thinks the Sounders may not have that same mentality in the early-going for the 2010 season.
“I think our fighting spirit in every game was very, very good. We came out with a great warrior mentality and we entered each game with that warrior mentality. Now when you had a little bit of success last year, I think we surprised some people maybe we even surprised ourselves, and sometimes like I say you drive with the emergency brake on a little bit,” Schmid said. “You are still pushing the pedal down but you just have that little bit of emergency brake because maybe you think, ‘Hey, maybe we did OK last year. Maybe I don’t need to make that last run or that last little bit.’ But that’s what we have got to find our way back to is just having that complete warrior mentality.”
Schmid knows that his team will make mistakes at times, but it is the recovery from those mistakes, he says, that will make or break the season.
“Everybody gives the ball away. Brazil gives the ball away. They don’t hold onto it forever and it’s how you react to those mistakes – that’s what determines a good team,” Schmid said. “The teams that react in the most efficient manner are the teams that are most successful. For us, it’s a matter of improving our transitional play, doing a better job right now of keeping the ball and still having that warrior’s mentality every time we step on the field.”
As heartbreaking as the conclusion to the streak of 32 straight league games without a stoppage time goal (43 overall, including Open Cup, friendlies, and MLS Cup playoffs), the streak itself was pretty remarkable.
“I think that’s a pretty good run,” Keller said. “If we can go another 30-some games without doing that I’ll be very happy.”

Stoppage Time Madness
In the last 10 years, there have been 5,034 goals scored in regular season MLS play. Of those 235 have come in second-half stoppage time. That is 4.7% of the total goals.
Here is the year-by-year breakdown of those numbers.
2009 - 571 goals, 28 scored in stoppage time, 4.9%
2008 - 591, 28, 4.7%
2007 - 441, 23, 5.2%
2006 - 503, 26, 5.2%
2005 - 551, 24, 4.4%
2004 - 392, 20, 5.1%
2003 - 433, 20, 4.6%
2002 - 421, 14, 3.3%
2001 - 519, 32, 6.2%
2000 - 612, 20, 3.3%
Since 2003, there hasn't been much variance in those numbers.
But here is a number that stood out to me. Of the 67 goals scored in Sounders FC regular season games by Seattle and their opponents in 2009, zero came in second-half stoppage time. None. Nada. Zilch. That says a lot about the structured play of the Sounders FC. When things got hectic in their own end, they didn't lose their cool. That is not to say that allowing the stoppage time goal against RSL is alarming, but rather to point out that they were the anomally last year. These things happen in soccer and should not cause too much panic.

The Weekend In Review
It was another busy weekend in the world of Sounders FC. Right here on SoundersFC.com you can read or watch my recap of the Sounders FC's 2-2 draw with Real Salt Lake. Or you can get Arlo White's review or catch his play-by-play of some of the game's highlights as well.
Elsewhere, Joshua Mayers of The Seattle Times made the trip out to Sandy, Utah for the game and at Salt Lake City's Deseret News, Michael Black says the defending champs are smarting from the draw as well.
After the game, Freddie Ljungberg and Kasey Keller have been all over the TV and radio. Keller joined the morning crew at KISW - The BJ Shea Morning Experience - at Elysian Fields as part of their Mariners Opening Day broadcast and talked about the hardcore support of the Sounders FC on Monday morning. Ljungberg was over at Q13 with Aaron Levine on Q It Up Sports on Sunday night and told us he wants to play 4-5 more years. Part 2 of that interview is here. Then on Monday, he joined Margaret Larson on New Day Northwest.
Meanwhile, last week we learned that Nate Jaqua went under the knife last week and will miss 4-6 weeks. Here is his conversation with Joshua Mayers on his surgery.
And finally, it's a look at some former Sounders. Marcus Hahnemann is featured in this story. To be honest, I thought from the headline that the story would be about Kasey Keller. It is definitely worth a read though. Another story that is a few weeks old is that USL Soccer named it's Top 25 players from the last decade and the list features seven players from the USL Sounders in the Top 20. They are Sebastien Le Toux (20), Roger Levesque (19), Dusty Hudock (16), Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar (15), Andrew Gregor (12), Leighton O'Brien (11) and Greg Howes (9). For those keeping track at home, I am not including Charles Gbeke because he appeared in only one game with the Sounders.
Speaking of Le Toux, he was named MLS Player of the Week after his hat trick led the Philadelphia Union to a 3-2 win over DC United. Congrats Seba.

Who is Real Salt Lake?
Who is Real Salt Lake?
Real Salt Lake joined MLS in 2005 alongside Chivas USA. After three seasons without a post-season appearance, they reached the Western Conference Finals in 2008 before losing to the New York Red Bulls. Then last year, after sneaking into the playoffs with an 11-12-7 record RSL climbed to the MLS Cup, culminating with a 5-4 win on penalties over the LA Galaxy. In 2008, they opened Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah after playing their first three-and-a-half seasons at the University of Utah’s Rice-Eccles Stadium.
Coach: Jason Kreis is the head coach at Real Salt Lake. The former midfielder/forward played 305 games in MLS, scoring 108 goals in that span. He started his career with Dallas in the league’s inaugural year in 1996 before a trade to RSL before the 2005 season. He was the first player acquired by RSL and scored 17 goals over 58 games before retiring to become head coach in 2007. He has an overall regular season record of 27-35-24.
Who To Watch: RSL is led by captain Kyle Beckerman. The midfielder has 19 career goals in 10 MLS seasons and has 10 caps with the US National Team, adding one goal for the Stars and Stripes. Robbie Findley led RSL with 12 goals last season, giving the forward 26 in his MLS career. Midfielder Javier Morales also provides speed on the wings. In net is goalkeeper Nick Rimando, a UCLA product who played under Sigi Schmid and is now in his 11th season in MLS.
Records: Seattle and RSL split their two regular season meetings in 2009, with both teams winning at home. The Sounders FC also topped RSL 4-1 in a US Open Cup qualifying game. RSL is currently 1-1-0 (3 points) in the 2010 season. Seattle is also 1-1-0 (3 points).
