Last Leg of the 2010 Voyage

Mariners win first game of Baseball doubleheader 3-1

Ken Burns and Lynn Novick co-directors of "The Tenth Inning"

Tonight I had the rare opportunity to watch a great doubleheader on TV, the first featured Felix Hernandez and the Mariners, the second was the baseball documentary “The Tenth Inning” . They were both winners. The actual live baseball game down in Arlington resulted in the third win in a row for the semi-surging Mariners 3-1 over a Rangers lineup that was minus half of its starters who were being rested for the postseason.

Second-string or not the Mariners Ace Felix Hernandez was pitching for the Cy-Young award and once more he proved he deserved it in what could have been his last outing of the season.

King Felix went 8 innings allowing only one run to improve his record to 13-12 on a night when both CC Sabathia  and David Price won for their respective two  AL East clubs to keep the Cy-Young race interesting. It is now up to sportswriters to vote after the season is over based on the performances to date. The King has proved he is the best in the AL so far,  though there is an outside chance Felix may get the ball again on Sunday which could seal the deal.

Felix was the beneficiary of a two-run homer by Justin Smoak in the top of the 4th, and even though you could tell Felix may not have had his best stuff tonight, three runs is more than he usually gets and thus made it work. Glad to see Smoak on a little roll here with his second home run so far in this series. My new hero Dan Cortes was warming up in the eighth, but Darren Brown went with Brandon League in the ninth to close out this game.

Speaking of Darren Brown, I wanted to say that while he may be no Pete Carroll as far as enthusiasm, he has done a good job in keeping this club on an even-keel since taking over the helm. If nothing else he deserves a serious interview for next year’s managerial opening, based on his handling of the team and himself under less than ideal conditions.

The second half of tonight’s doubleheader featured the new Baseball documentary : “The Tenth Inning” co-directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick on PBS. Ken Burns has once again put together a stunning and poignant portrayal of our National Pastime. Of course the clips and photography were great, along with the insightful interviews, but that’s not what caught and held my attention tonight. Rather it is the way that this documentary which focused on the 90′s, had a way of tying  all the big events  together in a way that was both magical and sad, much like baseball in general.

There was a few references to the Mariners, most notably showing Ken Griffey Jr. in his prime competing against other stars of the era like Bonds, McGwire, and Sosa for the national spotlight. It is important to remember that in the 90′s Griffey was not only idolized here in Seattle, but became a household name across the country. While there was a few cameo shots of Edgar Martinez and A-Rod, there was little attention paid to our great run in 95, or the powerhouse Mariners teams of that era. The Yankees of course had a lot of time lavished on them, including a good inside look at Joe Torre and the kind of man he is.

One of the  major themes covered was  the strike in 1994 and it’s effect on the players, teams and fans. The Montreal Expos were on a good run that year and never got to find out if they could have gone all the way because  the bitter strike got in the way. I also remember very clearly that the Mariners team of 1994 was just starting to get noticed and feared around the AL as the team to beat in 1994  right  before the season got cut short.

There is a lot more to see in the first part of this documentary and I don’t want to spoil it for you, but you can still get back in the game   in case you missed tonight’s show, by tuning-in Wednesday at 8pm on channel 9 PBS.Till then keep her between the rocks….http://jeffsmariners.com

Pauley and Smoak shine in 7-5 win over Texas

The Mariners continued their early spring training auditions tonight as Justin Smoak along with pitcher David Pauley kept themselves in good shape for starting jobs in 2011 with their performances in the 7-5 win over the Rangers tonight. Pauley got his second win in a row going six innings down in Arlington only allowing a pair of runs against a tough Texas lineup bound for the playoffs for the first time since 1999.

Smoak showed the kind of stick we have been hoping for tonight, going 3-4 including a huge three-run homer in the fifth off starter CJ Wilson who suffered the loss tonight for the Rangers. Of all the AAA guys playing out the rest of the year, the one we need to step-up the most is Justin Smoak, and he did tonight, with flying colors. Anthony Varvaro on the other hand gave-up a 3-run homer to Nelson Cruz tonight in the 7th and unlike Dan Cortes may not be a lock to make the club next year.

The slugger Greg Hallman got his first big league hit tonight driving-in Adam Moore with a double down the line to put the Mariners up 2-0 in the second. Hallman had a great year in Tacoma connecting for 33 home runs and  though he has a tendency to strike-out, Hallman deserves a shot to compete for the left field job next year. Michael Saunders has been given plenty of time to prove himself this year and he just hasn’t convinced anyone he is the guy. I like Saunders in the field but he has been struggling for the last couple at the plate after a decent start. Traditionally left field is a position where you can hide a mediocre defensive guy if he can produce at the plate, but in Saunders case it is the other way around which is no help for a club like ours that is desperate for offense.

Matt Mangini went hitless tonight but played a decent third and should be fighting for a shot there next spring unless somehow Jose Lopez comes back. Lots of questions in the offseason for this club as we continue the rebuilding process. Chuck Armstrong told Fox Network tonight that Jack Zduriencik will be coming back next year. This comes as no surprise as this organization needs to stick with Jack Z. and see if next year he can make a few moves that actually pan-out.

Nice to hear the Phillies clinched tonight with a 8-0 win over the Nationals. This is the fourth year in a row that the Phillies have won the NL East and they look like the favorites from the NL  to get to the Series. As far as drama goes for the Mariners we have Felix Hernandez on the mound tomorrow needing another good outing in his quest for the Cy-Young award. Also with 96 losses on the year and six games to go, we need to split the rest of the way to avoid the stigma of another 100 loss season. In addition the Mariners are going to need to put-up runs like they did tonight to avoid being the lowest scoring team in the AL since the DH was instituted in 73. So there are still some interesting tidbits to keep an eye on before this season is put to bed.http://jeffsmariners.com

Paperboy Josh Wilson helps delivers big blast in 6-2 win

It seems like months, and indeed it has been since Josh Wilson was swinging a hot bat earning him the nickname of “Paperboy” for delivering clutch hits. But today at Tropicana Field, Josh Wilson delivered probably his biggest hit of the year when he connected for a 3-run homer in the top of the sixth to put the Mariners up 5-2. The home run was only the second of the season for Wilson who has played well in the field since taking over for Jack Wilson, and will be competing for a roster spot again next spring. Josh Wilson always seems to have the same serious look on his face and did not even crack a smile after his round-tripper today.

Another stoic guy Luke French, managed to get the win today going 5 innings before being yanked by Daren Brown after giving-up a couple of singles in the bottom of the sixth. Jamie Wright then came in and pitched out of the jam in one of his better performances of the year against the first-place Rays. Luke French is another guy who like most of the young players called-up this year, has not been too impressive, yet he shows signs of being capable.

The Mariners added another run in the top of the 7th on Matt Mangini’s first RBI, and went on to win 6-2 to avoid the sweep. The Rays meanwhile still have a one game lead on the Yankees who play the Red Sox later on today.

We got another look at Dan Cortes in the eighth inning today and he was impressive. Cortes struck-out the side and was seen afterward in the dugout smiling and talking to Felix Hernandez who must be relieved to know this team has another aggressive pitcher who has the same desire to win as the King. Dan Cortes was moved to the bullpen this year, but I have a feeling he may get a look as a starter next year.

A little bird just landed on my shoulder and let me know there is going to be a little rally next Friday at 530 before the Mariners game put on by the Fire Nintendo group. This grass-roots group, like myself are tired of losing and seek to draw attention to the front office duo of Lincoln/Armstrong and their inept stewardship of this franchise. They will be meeting in front of the big glove outside the left field  gate and all are welcome to participate in this movement. I will post more details later in the week. Till then Go Seahawks!  http://jeffsmariners.com

Ichiro reaches 200 hits for 10th season in a row

Ichiro Suzuki became the first player in Major League history to have 200 or more hits per season for 10 years in a row. Ichiro has accomplished this great achievement while playing for a Seattle Mariners team that has not reached the play-offs since Ichiro’s first year in 2001. However day after day, year after year Ichiro has gone out and contributed in a way that may never be repeated. This day belongs to Ichiro who picked-up hit #200 in the fifth inning of a game that meant little outside of the individual accomplishments by Ichiro, Jose Bautista and Felix Hernandez in the 1-0 victory by the Blue Jays.

Jose Bautista is another nice story as he suddenly emerged on the scene after several years of mediocrity to becoming the Major league home run leader, and today in the first inning he connected for home run #50 in front of another small but lively crowd in Toronto. Great job Jose!

Oh yes there was another great player on the field today…..Felix Hernandez who happens to be in a race of his own, ie the race for the Cy-Young award. Felix once again pitched well enough to win, going 8 innings and only giving-up 1 run on a couple of hits including the homer by Bautista. Unfortunately for Felix the rest of the Mariners don’t hit like Ichiro and one more time they let the King down as his record now falls to 12-12.

On the positive side a game like this one should make it even clearer that Felix is the best pitcher in the AL, he just does not have a supporting cast outside of Ichiro. Sure we have a whole bunch of guys that did great in Tacoma, and yes I know they will all get a chance to prove they have what it takes to earn a spot after playing well in AAA. But if today was any indication of what next year is going to look like, count me out for spring training.

Somehow I seem to remember that guys only came up from AAA after it was clear they were ready for Major League pitching. Outside of maybe Mangini who had a nice line drive single in the 9th, our youngsters looked lost at the plate today. But hey, they are cheap and the experiment this year of bringing in several semi-good veterans didn’t seem to work either. Still would love to find a guy like Bautista out there who has a few seasons under his belt and has figured out what works at this level. But that’s what they pay the GM for.

One more time congratulations to Ichiro on his big day as well as Jose Bautista and Felix Hernandez for their great seasons thus far as well.http://jeffsmariners.com

Jose Lopez hits 3 homers to carry M’s over Jays 6-3!

Jose Lopez connects for 3 Homers!

Yes you read it right; Jose Lopez the Mariners much maligned third basemen clobbered three home runs tonight against the Toronto Blue Jays to lead his club to a 6-3 victory! Lopez homered off three different pitchers, hitting solo shots in the third and the sixth, then connecting for a 2-run bomb in the eighth. In an interview after the game Lopez said this was the first time in his entire baseball career where he has accomplished this rare feat.

I am not even sure how to write this post as it has been so long since a Mariner; especially Lopez has been hot for a whole game like this. The last Mariner to connect for three homers in a single game was Alex Rodriguez in 2000, and of course Mike Cameron had 4 bombs on May 2 2002 against the White Sox, so this has to go down as one of the highlights of the season…. Yikes!

Of course Lopez did not do it all tonight as he only drove-in 4 runs, the other two came off the bat of Michael Saunders who smacked a 2-run poke of his own in the second inning. David Pauley also pitched a nice game and came-away with his third win of the year as he finally received some run-support thanks to the mighty Jose Lopez and his sidekick Michael Saunders the Canadian Condor!

The 12,302 fans in Toronto are used to seeing power displays as their club leads the majors with 233 homers including one tonight by Vernon Wells. However the Mariners who are last with 95 homers silenced the small crowd with a rare power display of their own. The Blue Jays fans however did perk-up every time Jose Bautista came to the plate, hoping to see their slugger connect for # 50 on the year. But alas they will have to wait another day along with the Japanese media and fans hoping to see Ichiro pick-up hit # 200 for the tenth year in a row. Ichiro did manage to move his total to 198 tonight with a single to center in the top of the eighth. Of course the polite Canadian fans even clapped for Ichiro tonight in keeping with their reputation as all-around decent folks (even Geoff Baker at times can be civil!)

This game was so different from most of the Mariners games this year, as you could for once sense that our pitchers were confident on the mound secure with the knowledge they had a lead. Believe it or not up until tonight’s game the Mariners offense had only scored 14 runs for David Pauley in his 12 starts. That is worse run-support than even Felix Hernandez has had. Speaking of the King, Hernandez will be getting the start in the day game tomorrow in a game that actually has the makings of some real drama and potential excitement. First of all we have Felix Hernandez making his final push for the Cy-Young award needing a win to push his total to 13, then you have the home run chase by Bautista, and finally it is possible that Ichiro could reach hit #200 tomorrow. Love to see at least two of those events happening, and plan on watching this series finale in the morning just in case the Mariners can produce one final day of greatness, just like Jose Lopez had tonight! http://jeffsmariners.com

Will the last Mariners fan turn out the lights….

Jon Lester kept his hopes alive for a shot at the Cy Young award going 8 innings and allowing 1 run on 4 hits to a Mariners team that has forgotten how to score runs, or perhaps never really knew how. Tonight only 19,063 fans paid to get in, and it sounded as if half of them were Red Sox fans, mixed in with what is left of the Mariners faithful.

Doug Fister as usual pitched an ok game at least until giving up a 2-run homer in the 8th. 2010 has proven to be a frustrating year for a pitcher who started the season on fire and is ending it with a string of mediocre outings. But as usual it was the lack of offense by the Mariners starting lineup that is the culprit in this loss.

It is apparent now that we indeed may be headed for the dreaded 100-loss season which may be the best thing for this franchise. There comes a point with any dysfunctional person or organization where you just have to detach and allow the person or organization to fail. Done are the days of rationalizing, blaming, hoping, or scapegoating as the Mariners did today by firing Carmen Fusco director of scouting over the Josh Lueke fiasco.

The fans are voting with their feet and wallets at this point as tonight’s feeble attendance, the lowest on record for a Red Sox game clearly shows.

So what now? Outside of divine intervention or a concerted effort by the fans to demand change at the top of the food-chain, there is not much to do. I cannot imagine that the fans in Seattle are going to forget everything this offseason with a few flashy trades like last winter. Most will just try to forget about it and focus on football or their own lives rather than wasting anymore emotional energy on this team.

Many of you are too young to remember the Boeing-bust in the early 70′s which was a time of high unemployment in much the same way as now but without the diversity in the local economy. I remember seeing a famous billboard at the time with ” Will the last person  leaving Seattle turn out the lights” written on it . Times have changed but the spirit of that sad billboard applies to the Mariners as the question again arises ” Will the last Mariners fan turn out the lights……”http://jeffsmariners.com

The long voyage continues as Mariners lose 3-0

Sometimes a voyage for a Mariner working on a ship just never seems like it will end, as the weeks and months begin to melt together into a blur. This season the voyage for the Seattle Mariners baseball team has reached that point where one game or series is not that much different than the other long nights spent by this club and it’s dwindling fans.

The Angels completed the sweep of the three-game series today 3-0 in much the same way as the majority of the games have gone this season. Good starting pitching   in this case Jason Vargas was wasted again by an offense that not only is the worst in the majors this year, but is perhaps going to end up as one of the worst in  modern history.

It was a bit sad to drive by the vibrant and alive Qwest Field on the way back from a visit to a ship in Port, knowing the baseball season including tonight’s Rainiers game has all but been forgotten this year by the general Seattle population. It is great that both the Seahawks and Huskies football team won this weekend but indeed baseball is coming to an end soon once again this year in the NW without the joy and excitement surrounding postseason play.

Like some of you I will be following the payoffs and perhaps pick-up last years bandwagon team the Yankees and follow them as if I really cared. Last year it was an odd experience for me to be rooting for the Yankees though they won, so I am contemplating jumping on the Giants or Braves bandwagon to keep it interesting.

Yes I will be following football, but baseball is my passion, though the this year’s Mariners have done their best to kill my love of the game. Of course one thing I learned after going to Sea for 20 years, that this voyage like all the rest will some day come to an end and in this case it won’t be a moment to soon.http://jeffsmariners.com

SPECIAL NEWS FLASH: THE TACOMA RAINIERS BEAT SACRAMENTO TONIGHT 4-1 AND ARE THE PCL PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE CHAMPS! RYAN FIRERBEND PITCHED A 2-HITTER THOUGH 8, AND MATT MANGINI WENT 3-4 INCLUDING A HOME RUN TO LEAD THE RAINIERS. NOW IT IS ON TO MEMPHIS TO CONTINUE THE PLAY-OFFS, GOOD LUCK RAINIERS!

A day to remember and another day to forget

Lou Piniella and Mariners after 9-11 2001

Today is a day to look back and remember and honor those lost in the tragedy of 9-11 2001. The photo to the left shows the Seattle Mariners in a spontaneous showing of love for their country with an American flag raised at Safeco field. That day changed the world as we knew it and things have never been the same.

Things have never been the same  for baseball in Seattle since the 116 win season in 2010 either,  and today was more of  the same as the Rainiers lost 5-1 at Safeco, while the parent club lost 7-4 in Anaheim.

The Rainiers were never able to get anything going today against former Mariner 37 year-old Brett Tomko who went 6 scoreless innings in front of a crowd(?) of 983 fans. As a result the Rainiers must win tomorrow at Safeco against the pesky Sacramento River Cats or their season is over.

Meanwhile down in Anaheim the Mariners were unable to get it done for their Ace Felix Hernandez who now goes to 11-11, and may very well be out of the hunt for the Cy Young award. As usual the Mariners offense could not produce any offense  until it was too late, scoring 4 runs in the last two innings after Hernandez had already been pulled by manager Daren Brown.

On the bright side Ichiro still looks like he is on pace to get 200 hits this year as he spanked a 3-run homer in the 8th and had a chance to do the same in the 9th with 2-on but lined-out to end the game.

Another nice development as of late has been the play of Chone Figgins who not only got a couple of hits tonight, but continues to show some real flair in the field and on the bases. While this day like most of the rest of the season will be another to shove back in to our already overflowing holding tanks of misery, it does seem that there is a nucleus of players between the Rainiers and Mariners that could be part of an improved club in 2012. This offseason may not be as busy as last year’s but with perhaps a couple of free agents from other teams we may be able to compete next year. Notice I said “compete” not win, yes folks I am breaking through my denial and realize we are still a few years away from a playoff team no matter what happens this winter.

Anyway I know most of you are already switching gears to football given the state of the baseball in the NW, so if you happen to be downtown after the Seahawks game Sunday and are still hungry for action, walk over to Safeco and cheer on the Rainiers at 7pm.

In closing I hope everyone takes time to once again honor those who died on Sept. 11 2001 and the servicemen and women who fought in or are still fighting the  subsequent conflicts abroad , whether you supported the decision to fight them or not.  I particularly want to salute my nephew Eric Lawson who served twice in Iraq with the Air Force, as well as all the Merchant Mariners who are entrusted with carrying the nation’s war goods in times of conflict.http://jeffsmariners.com

Mariners start-off with a bang, end with a thud

Another fan cuckoo for Coco Crisp!

Luke French got the start tonight and was shaky from the get-go. The problem with French is that he basically has only two pitches, a mediocre fastball and a change-up. And on nights like tonight where he doesn’t have the command of his fastball like he did in his last start against Cleveland, trouble is sure to follow as in tonight’s game where we lost 4-3 despite homers by Branyan and Tui in the first couple innings.

French got fried to a crisp by a 2-run homer in the 3rd off the bat of the guy with the best name in baseball, that’s right you guessed it; none other than Coco Crisp! Of course not to be outdone our club has a player with only one name, and Ichiro who has made a name for himself (even if it is only one)  did manage to get a couple of hits tonight including a lead-off double in the 5th for hit #183. Unfortunately after Figgins moved Ichiro to third on a ground ball both Branyan and Lopez went down on strikes to end the threat.

French left the game in the 6th with a couple of runners on and nobody out giving the ball to Jamie Wright who battled away but eventually let in a pair of runs and the Mariners basically surrendered after that.

The A’s are now 7 games back in the AL West after winning this series and have been able to stay in the hunt way past their normal expiration date, it would be a huge story if they were able to catch the Rangers somehow.

The Tacoma Rainiers are playing the AAA affiliate of the A’s in the play-offs and  battled back to a 10-8 win tonight in the first game of the series. Interesting to note that former Mariners Brett Tomko and John Halama are both pitching for the Rivercats, these two ancient Mariners make me want to reconsider retiring from softball! I’m hoping to catch a Rainiers game when they play at Safeco this weekend as it will be as close as we come to postseason baseball in Seattle this year.

The team has a day off for travel tomorrow before heading down to Anaheim to play the Angels who won 4-3 tonight against the Indians, but  like ourselves are mostly playing for pride and player development in these last 22 games. On a final note as rough and sad as this year has been, I’m not looking forward to the long winter with no baseball.

On a side note I just read Geoff Baker’s late night post on his blog which contained an e-mail from Howard Lincoln to his staff. In it he tries to assure everyone that everything is under control and there is no need to listen to those nay-sayers in the media and blogs! Looks like the house of cards is starting to crumble and the top management is starting to feel the heat fom all the disgruntled fans after this year. I will follow-up with more tomorrow after the dust settles.http://jeffsmariners.com

Mariners beat Athletics 7-5 in a sloppy but fun game

The Mariners managed to hold-on to beat the Oakland Athletics tonight 7-5 in a game that featured a little of everything tonight in front of 10,067 lonesome fans at the Oakland Coliseum. Tonight’s starting pitchers, Doug Fister and Dallas Braden started off the season as if they were bound for Cy Young consideration. But tonight they both looked quite average as they each were not locating their pitches and this one could have gone either way.

Fortunately for the Mariners they were able to have a big inning early scoring 5 runs in the second sending 11 men to the plate in one of the few big innings the Mariners have put together this year. Granted the 5-run outburst was helped along with a few bloopers, flairs, a broken bat single, a bad throw, a walk and before you knew it we had 5 runs on the board against Dallas Braden. After averaging 2 runs a game for the last 12 games I’m sure our guys were not ashamed to rock the opposing pitcher in this sort of lucky break rally. As a fan it was fun to watch the Mariners send 11 guys to the plate and go 5-5 with men in scoring position at one point in the inning.

This game actually meant something to the A’s who are chasing the Rangers  but after tonight’s loss still remain 7 back in the AL West. The A’s of course sit across the bay from the more glamorous SF Giants who are closing in on the Padres in front of packed houses. However in working-class Oakland it is not unusual to see only 10,000 in the stands for a team that is basically a Green-collar sort of club that doesn’t get much respect, but makes the most of what they have.

After the Mariners added another run on a homer by Adam Moore to make it 6-0, the scrappy A’s finally got a couple of runs in the 5th inning after which Daren Brown went to the bullpen. Both Garrett Olson and Jamie Wright did their jobs holding the A’s scoreless for 3 innings aided by another run in the top of the 7th by the Mariners.

But this goofy game sort of had a mind of its own tonight and with two-out in the top of the 9th the wheels started to fall off for Brandon League. The A’s managed to get a little rally of their own together and before you could say Jack London the A’s had  3 runs in and 2 on base before David Aardsma was called in to close this one out.

All together the Mariners had 13 hits on the night compared to 12 for the A’s in what was a fun game to watch even with the sloppy play by both sides.http://jeffsmariners.com

Mariners bats don’t work on Labor Day

Crew of vessel FV Tian YU being held for ransom

The Oakland Athletics picked-up a game in the AL West race today with their 6-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners in front of 11,581 diehard A’s fans at the Oakland Coliseum. Jason Vargas picked-up the loss and now drops to 9-9 on the year against a scrappy Oakland team who are now only 7 games back in the West despite being a game under .500

Today’s game was more of the same for the Mariners as the offense never really got on track outside of a home run by Franklin Gutierrez in the 7th. The A’s have built another low-budget team around pitching, defense and timely hitting and for them somehow it actually seems to work. Brett Anderson got the start today and went 7 2/3 innings picking-up the win to improve his record to 4-6 to go along with his 2.97 era.

It is amazing to think that the A’s are still in the pennant race after the way Texas was playing for awhile, but sure enough the Rangers are doing their traditional fade-away act thus allowing the A’s to stay in the hunt. If you recall at the beginning of the year people were saying the AL West was wide open this year and that the Mariners had a good shot in 2010. Well they were right, except for the fact that our team never got things rolling.

Oh well enough of that already as today is Labor Day, a holiday to honor workers as well as the traditional end of summer. In honor of the working people and their Unions around the country  who have struggled for things like the 40 hour week, overtime, and safety on the job I have attached an electronic petition hoping you will sign it. As many of you know I have a background as a Merchant Mariner and I still work in that industry fighting to protect the rights of Mariners on Foreign Flag ships known as FOC’s as my day job.

One of the big issues facing Seafarers and their families today is the problem of Piracy occurring off the coast of Somalia. Unfortunately Piracy is a real issue that effects modern-day Mariners like those pictured above, as their ships are held hostage for ransom money. Sadly the sailors and their families are often not mentioned, as the primary concern is often just the ship itself and the cargo.

At any rate being that it is Labor Day and I am a former Merchant Mariner, and yes this is a Mariners blog I am wondering if you would be willing to sign the online petition I have attached a link for, as well as circulate the petition to your friends.www.endpiracypetition.org

This is a serious matter and we need to bring it to the attention of the UN and other government bodies to demand action on behalf of all the Mariners and their families that are adversely effected by this problem. Thankyou and Happy Labor Day….http://jeffsmariners.com

Felix Hernandez steers Mariners through Indian waters 3-0

GM Jack Zduriencik at USS Mariner event Sept. 4th

Felix Hernandez continued to force the question of who is the best pitcher in the American League in 2010 with another dominant performance today, as the Mariners beat the Cleveland Indians 3-0 on a perfect September day in Seattle.

The King actually received some run support today as well, thanks primarily to Russell “The Muscle” Branyan who is on a roll himself driving in a pair of runs including a homer in the sixth. Branyan knows his return next year as the Mariners DH depends on how he finishes out the season and has homered in three of the last four games, making his bat hard to ignore as well.

Hernandez had command of all three of his pitches today and was able to fan 9 Indians giving him the AL lead with 209 on the year. It seems as if Hernandez is in the zone so to speak, showing more confidence and savvy as the season moves on. Of course for Felix to win the Cy Young award he will need to continue to pitch this way and receive run support if he has any hopes of getting the votes needed to win this coveted award, due to the East Coast bias in the press and the fact that Hernandez is only 11-10.

It is nice for the fans to have something to follow as the fall air creeps into the Puget Sound. Both Felix and Ichiro are in the hunt for something special as Ichiro shoots for his tenth year in a row with 200 hits (got 2 today) and Hernandez chases the prestigious Cy Young award.

Wanted to note that I attended the event put on by the blogs: USS Mariner and Lookout Landing on Saturday night and though the game kind of sucked, it was great to talk to fellow bloggers as well as get to hear Jack Zduriencik address the group of a hundred or so before the game.

Jack Z. was fairly candid and did admit that this year has been a big disappointment but he emphasized that we have a lot of talent developing in the minors that could help the big club in years to come. He chose to avoid answering a question about the whole Griffey fiasco, and gave the same stock responses that a media savvy guy like him would give around the whole Josh Lueke situation. The event was certainly no love-fest but the questions were civil and it is a testament to the power of the internet that a GM would even take the time to talk to a group of bloggers and their readers.

So after salvaging a split with the Indians our boys head down the Coast for a visit to the Oakland Coliseum for a series with our division rivals the Athletics to see if we can play the role of spoiler and dash any lingering hopes the feisty A’s have of catching the Rangers. The pennant races around the majors are still very interesting to follow and I look forward to reporting on an exciting postseason. Alas it would be much sweeter for us all if our sailors were in the race, but I guess we will have to focus on the consolation prizes of the Ichiro and Hernandez runs for glory. Mariners win 1-0 with pitching, defense and French!

Luke French pitched another gem tonight against the visiting Cleveland Indians who did not get a hit until the  seventh inning off of French who got lots of help from his defense, and just enough from the offense who scored one run in the first inning.

The Mariners got their lone runner in the first inning off of a single by Franklin Gutierrez to score Ichiro from second. Other than that the Mariners bats were kept quiet by Indians starter Fausto Carmona who pitched eighth innings and only allowed four hits.

Luke French kept the Indians at bay with his 87 mph fastball and an occasional change-up that he managed to move around the strike zone at will tonight. French apparently has stopped throwing his slider for now and against the young Indians he got away with only having two pitches in his arsenal tonight.

The Mariners defense played a key role in preserving this victory tonight, Michael Saunders may not be much with the bat but he ran down a ball in the 7th that he alertly threw to second to double-off Shin-Soo Choo which helped end a threat by the Tribe. Later in the ninth Saunders made a great sliding catch on a foul ball to help payback  Mr. Choo who terrorized the Mariners last night.

The ninth inning was a real nail-biter as David Aardsma who also really only has one pitch he can throw for strikes a fastball, used  his slider, split-finger along with his fastball  tonight in an effort that wasn’t pretty but got the job done. Aardsma has been effective as of late and he got some help in the ninth from not only Saunders with his great catch, but also from the combination of Moore to Josh Wilson in a stolen base attempt that highlighted the athletic abilities of these two guys and was a joy to watch as they got a big out.

But that was not the end as  Aardsma threw a wild pitch that resulted in  runners on second and third with two down as Shelley Duncan was at  the plate.  Duncan who had earlier broken-up French’s no-hitter in the seventh, battled with Aardsma in a dramatic 9 pitch duel that finally ended with Duncan going down on strikes on a high fastball  to end the game before 17,271 fans down at the Safe who cheered as if we were in the World Series!

I will be attending tomorrow’s game after attending the pre-game activities that Lookout Landing and the USS Mariners Blogs have organized. Am looking forward to hearing what kind of spin that Jack Zduriencik puts on this year, and more importantly his vision for moving forward.

One thing positive that we all learned tonight was that Luke French may indeed be a legitimate Major League pitcher who can perhaps be counted on in 2011 to fill a spot in the rotation. This would allow us to focus on filling some of the other gaps, especially with   an offense that has averaged only 3.24 runs a game which is on pace to being one of the worst in baseball in the past 30 years.

Oh and be for I forget I want to remind everyone that next friday at Safeco the AAA Rainiers will be playing a playoff game if they make it as Cheney Stadium is finally undergoing a remodel job after 50 years! http://jeffsmariners.com

Something to Choo on

Excited Winter ball fans in Puerto Rico

Doug Fister pitched well early on in this one retiring 15 batters in a row before falling apart in the sixth inning as the race to see who will avoid losing 100 games between these two squads heads down the home stretch.

There is not much to say about this one that has any positive spin to it at all with the exception of the fact that former Indian-former Mariner-current Mariner Russell Branyan did hit his 21st homer tonight in front of 17,269 fans.

This season, like the weather this summer never really got going in any consistent way, yet they are both almost over. I can honestly say that I’m not sure which was more disappointing, the lack of sun or the lack of a competitive team to follow this summer. Actually I won’t miss the 2010 Mariners much and I hope we never have to see another team like them, though I have lived here too long to know that we may be in for a long cold winter of rebuilding that may be as gloomy as the upcoming 7 months of rain.

I have decided to attend the game Saturday night and am going with an old friend from Vashon High who like myself is a die-hard fan and ex-jock. The USSM and Lookout Landing Blogs are sponsoring a get together before the game where we will actually get to listen to Jack Z. and ask a few questions. This should be interesting and I am looking forward to meeting some other Bloggers and hardcore fans though I imagine it will be a bit of a glum lot considering the way this year is going.

On a positive note I have begun to think about ways to upgrade my blog for next season with a new theme and more pictures, videos and news from around the league. I’m also considering taking a trip to either Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic or possibly Venezuela to watch some winter ball this year and try to send back some posts including possibly video clips for you all. Anyone out there with info on the Winter ball leagues or possibly interested in going let me know after you Choo on it for awhile….http://jeffsmariners.com

Mariners clutch-less in Seattle

Willie Mays had a knack for getting a hit when it counted

The Mariners lost tonight 4-2 to the Angels in a manner that we have grown all too accustomed to in 2010 with good starting pitching, good defense and base running, overshadowed by an anemic offense.

Despite the fact that the Mariners out-hit the Angels 10-5, our scaliwags simply could not get the big hit when we needed one. Oh ya, and 2 of the Angels hits just happened to be home runs, including a 2-out, 2-run blast by Matsui in the 7th.

I know many in the sabermetrics crowd cringe when you mention the term “clutch hitter” arguing with their reams of data that the term is just another archaic phrase that needs to be phased-out.

Well so be it, but I would argue that the 2010 Mariners are anti-clutch hitters then, and proved my theory once again tonight as they stranded runners in scoring position all night.

Though Franklin Gutierrez made a few great plays tonight, including a spectacular grab to rob Howie Kendrick of a homer in the 6th, he also had a classic anti-clutch hit in the bottom of the 5th grounding into a double-play with the sacks full and nobody out.

Of course Guti was not alone as Russell Branyan had runners on second and third with 1 down in the first and went on to fan, followed by a fly-out from Jose Lopez who is perhaps the league leader this year in getting hits when they don’t count, and rarely when they do.

So the clutch-lessness (new word) continues as the Mariners wasted another good performance by Jason Vargas who ended up with the loss to Trevor Bell who was not that impressive yet still prevailed.

The Angels did bring in a young reliever Jordon Walden in the 8th who was quite impressive topping-out at 100 mph on the radar. Of course not to be outdone the Mariners countered with none other than the local boy Sean White who gave-up a homer to make it 4-2 Angels and the rest is history as they say.

I do recall watching a few hitters in my life who were not anti-clutch such as Willie Mays, Edgar Martinez and Kirby Puckett who all had a knack for getting a big hit when the game was on the line . But since the advanced metrics crowd cannot accept the term clutch-hitter, I will just end by noting that while there may be no such thing as a clutch-hitter, there is certainly a type of player that is anti-clutch and the 2010 Mariners may go down in history as the all-time, anti-clutch hitting team as they proved again tonight.http://jeffsmariners.com
