Charlie Whitehurst

Is Charlie Whitehurst Done In The NFL?

This question has come up on twitter a few times, and it always seems to spark an interesting discussion. Whitehurst is certainly done in Seattle, but will another team give him a shot. What really are the odds that Whitehurst is on an NFL roster for week 1 in 2012?

Remember, despite what you might think of him, Whitehurst has all the physical tools. He’s a big QB with a big arm. He mobile. He throws a good looking deep ball. What’s not to love, right?

The problem with him has always been that the game never slows down for him. He looks lost. He’s slow on making decisions and is easily fooled by the defense. At times he looks like he moving, and thinking, in slow motion while everyone else is at full speed.

Is he good enough to be a backup QB? Sure, as long as your starter doesn’t get hurt for an extended period. Whitehurst stepped in in week 17 of 2010 and played decently, and he led the Seahawks to that come from behind victory drive against the Giants this year. He also looked awful at time in both of those games, was dreadful against the Giants in 2010, and even worse against Cleveland and Cincinnati earlier this season.

Will someone else see his physical tools and think they can fix him? … [visit site to read more]

QBs I Don’t Want To See In A Seahawk Uniform

Yesterday profiled a few late round QB options that the Seahawks might take a stab a at. There are a couple more that I’ll get to eventually, but today I thought it would be a good idea to profile a few QB who I don’t want to see on the Seahawks. Seriously, I’d rather stick with Tarvaris Jackson than see any of these players get time under center in Seattle:

Current Pros:

Charlie Whitehurst – Lets face it. I think we’ve all see quite enough of Charlie. I think the Seahawks like what he was physically, and hoped they could teach him the mental aspect of the game. Clearly they were wrong, and I think everyone involved will be happy to see him go away.

Matt Cassel – Cassel lost his job because of injury, but he ultimately lost his job because he wasn’t a franchise QB and the Chiefs want to look into finding someone that is. Orton is the guy in KC as of right now, so Cassel will soon be looking for a new home. He’s nothing more than a league average QB, kinda like Jackson.

Mark Sanchez – It’s rumored that the Jets could make him available and then try and get Peyton Manning from the Colts. While I don’t buy that rumor, I also don’t want to see Sanchez in Seattle. He’s a horribly overrated player who can be really bad at times, and rarely does much to help his team win.

Make The Right Call

The Seattle Seahawks are not going to make the playoffs.

That statement hardly comes as a shock to Seahawks fans.  There was a possibility, though remote, that the Seahawks could have made a playoff run.  They had a favorable schedule against opponents that have a lot of issues.  It was improbable, but still possible.  Even though they aren’t officially eliminated from playoff contention, last Sunday’s loss to the Washington Redskins ended Seattle’s playoff aspirations for all intents and purposes.

Now Pete Carroll can make the decision he should have made a couple of weeks ago, a decision that he doesn’t want to make, but needs to.  He needs to sit Tarvaris Jackson for the rest of the season.

Jackson has gamely played the last five weeks with a partially torn pectoral muscle.  However, his game is clearly deteriorating.  Jackson is an average quarterback at best when healthy.  This injury is limiting his capabilities more each week.  The coaches have done a good job of working around Jackson’s limitations, but that can only work for so long.  Jackson was exposed during the Washington game, and the situation is only going to get worse.

Carroll and General Manager John Schneider must accept blame for not having an adequate backup in place.  Even though the team paid a huge price for him and to him, Carroll has no confidence whatsoever in Charlie Whitehurst.  This is not a new development; Carroll felt the same way last season.  Matt Hasselbeck had injuries, but nothing nearly as severe as what has befallen Jackson.  If a coach is not willing to play someone unless under the most dire of circumstances, then that player shouldn’t be on the team.  … [visit site to read more]

The Quarterback Scenario

The more I watch TJack play, the easier it is to reach two conclusions:

  1. He’s more hurt that anyone wants to admit and he’s not getting any better
  2. Clipboard Charlie is so … [visit site to read more]

Seahawks Fans, Please Stop Blaming The Refs

One of the themes I’ve been seeing from Seahawks fans today has been outrage about the phantom illegal block in the back call on the Leon Washington return for a TD. The call was an awful call. Everyone thinks it was awful. Even the Fox announcers said it was awful. I also get that the 7 points was enough to change the outcome of the game. I can do the math as good as anyone, but the whining needs to stop.

As bad as that call was, those calls exist in ever single NFL game. It is unfortunately part of the NFL right now. The officiating is pretty bad. Thing is, I don’t think it’s all that worse today than it was 20 years ago. Today we just get see replays from every angle so we can see the mistakes multiple times in high definition. … [visit site to read more]

Seahawks Reap an Early Reward During Rebuilding Season

You can’t ask for any more from this team than they displayed on Sunday.  I was happy seeing the improvement despite the loss during the Atlanta game last week.  This game might have been viewed in the same way except the Seahawks did more than just show improvement.  They beat a team favored by 9 points on the East Coast. … [visit site to read more]

Baring Injury, I Doubt Jackson Gets Benched

Over the last couple days, I’ve looked at the QB problems the Seahawks have been having from a couple different angles. First I showed that Jackson has been about as bad as any QB in the NFL so far, and then later I showed that Whitehurst isn’t a magical cure, but that he at least is equal to Jackson and could continue to improve and end up better than Jackson with a few starts under his belt.

The thing is, I don’t see the Seahawks making such a move. I don’t mean to suggest that Carroll and Co. don’t see the same things that you and I see. And no, I’m not implying some irrational stubbornness and inability to admit a mistake. We all know that’s not the case. (See Lendale White, Mark Legree, etc.)
