Zavaleta welcomes visitors to training
CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – It’s not often that the Sounders have a welcoming committee at Grande Sports World for training camp. On Wednesday, they did though, as a truck was parked near the entrance. After the Sounders bus began unloading, a couple emerged from the truck and greeted the team on their way into the locker room.
The couple were the grandparents of Sounders FC first round SuperDraft pick Eriq Zavaleta, Arizona natives who made the drive to Casa Grande to watch the young defender in training.
“It’s great to have them here to watch. I knew they were thinking about coming, but we got here and there they were, waiting in front of the bus,” Zavaleta said. “It was pretty cool to see them here.”
Former Chivas USA assistant coach Greg Vanney, who also was Director of Soccer Operations at Grande Sports World, was also on hand. Vanney is Zavaleta’s uncle and was in town from his home in the Los Angeles area for a meeting.
“It’s a bit of a blast from the past for me,” Zavaleta said. “I played here a bit with RSL and it’s cool to come here as a professional and play with the Sounders.”
