Whitecaps sign Premier League vet Reo-Coker
The Vancouver Whitecaps finished the 2012 season with their first MLS Cup playoff appearance and since then, they have tried to ensure not only a return trip to the postseason, but also a chance at a deeper run.
On Thursday, the Whitecaps signed 28-year-old midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker, getting the former West Ham and Aston Villa player’s rights from the Portland Timbers in exchange for Vancouver’s second round picks in the 2014 and 2015 MLS SuperDrafts.
Reo-Coker played 120 matches with West Ham United and 102 matches with Aston Villa from 2004-2011 before playing with Bolton Wanderers and Ipswich Town over the last two seasons.
He joins a list of additions for Vancouver that also includes Japanese midfielder Daigo Kobayashi and Honduran defender Johnny Leveron.
The Sounders meet the Whitecaps June 8 at CenturyLink Field in the first of three matches against their rivals to the north.
