Toronto captain Frings retires
Last year, Toronto FC’s two biggest stars were stricken with injuries and on Tuesday, one of them announced his retirement.
Both Torsten Frings and Danny Koevermans had lengthy absences for Toronto in 2012, Frings with a hamstring strain early in the season and a hip injury late in the year and Koevermans with a knee injury. Both underwent surgery and while Koevermans is recovering, Toronto FC announced on Tuesday that Frings was retiring.
The 36-year-old midfielder and Toronto captain had two goals in 33 league matches in MLS play. He came to MLS in 2011 after 15 seasons in Germany’s Bundesliga, mostly with Werder Bremen but with brief stops with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich.
A club that regularly uses all three of their Designated Player roster slots, Toronto FC presently only has one in use on Koevermans. Others that have filled that role for Toronto have included Frings, Eric Hassli, Julian de Guzman and Mista.
