Timbers acquire two more Akron products

Caleb Porter is putting his stamp on the Portland Timbers and thus far, and it is an Akron-tinted stamp as the new Portland head coach swapped for two products of his Akron program that he coached for seven seasons from 2006-2012.

On Wednesday, the Timbers acquired midfielders Michael Nanchoff and Ben Zemanski in trades with the Vancouver Whitecaps FC and Chivas USA, respectively, adding to a club that already features former Zips midfielder Darlington Nagbe and has goalkeeper David Meves on trial.  This offseason, they also made a trade to acquire the Homegrown rights to current Akron defender Bryan Gallego.

In exchange, the Timbers sent a second round pick in the 2015 MLS Supplemental Draft to Vancouver for the rights to Nanchoff, who is currently out of contract, and the rights to US National Team defender Jonathan Bornstein and allocation money to Chivas USA for Zemanski.

By dealing Bornstein, who plays for the Tigres side that is set to face the Sounders in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals next month, the Timbers have now traded the rights to both US National Team players they selected in the 2010 expansion draft.  Previously, they traded Robbie Findley to Real Salt Lake for allocation money.  Both Bornstein and Findley were traded to the last teams they played for in MLS before embarking on careers outside of MLS.
