On this date in 2009, the Sounders FC opened their inaugural training camp on the mist-covered field at the Seahawks training facility at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center.
The mix of players brought to Seattle via the Expansion Draft, SuperDraft, transfer and from the USL-era Sounders went through the paces on the outdoor fields and, like they were at the first session of 2013, bundled up with sweatshirts, jackets and long pants amidst freezing temperatures.
That was also the club’s introduction to Fredy Montero, who did individual work on the side of the field before later that day finalizing a loan deal from Deportivo Cali in Colombia.
“We’ve been a bit bored and itching to go,” said first round SuperDraft selection Steve Zakuani following the club's inaugural training session. “It was good to put some faces to the names. Obviously it’s the first day, so we’re still going to get better and get used to each other, but it was good."
