Sounders add more draft picks in trade with Portland
TUCSON, Ariz. – One day after picking up two future second round picks in a trade that also brought the Sounders the No. 3 spot in the Allocation Order and midfielder Shalrie Joseph, Seattle picked up two more future draft picks from the Portland Timbers.
Seattle held the right of first refusal on French defender Mikael Silvestre after placing him on their Discovery list in December. However, the Timbers sought to sign the former Manchester United defender and when he agreed to terms with the league, needed to swap with Seattle for his rights. On Wednesday, that deal was announced and the Sounders will get a first round pick in the 2014 Supplemental Draft along with a conditional pick in 2015.
The trade puts the Sounders back in the first round of the Supplemental Draft in 2014 after previously trading their pick in that round to the Vancouver Whitecaps in exchange for the first overall pick in Stage 2 of the 2011 MLS Re-Entry Process, which they used to acquire Marc Burch.
In addition, the Sounders had dealt a conditional pick to Toronto FC for the No. 1 allocation priority to acquire Marcus Hahnemann and a conditional pick to Real Salt Lake for the No. 1 discovery priority on midfielder Mario Martinez.
