Sigi suspended; Schmetzer takes the reins

Sounders FC assistant coach Brian Schmetzer coached the USL Sounders to championships in 2005 and 2007.  They also had the best record in the league in 2002 and 2007, leading the club to a 100-57-41 record in his seven seasons at the helm.

So when the club lost head coach Sigi Schmid to suspension for Sunday’s match against FC Dallas, they have plenty of reason to be confident that Schmetzer can lead the Sounders to their goal in their final regular season home match of the 2012 season.

In addition to his success at the USL level, Schmetzer also took the reins when Schmid was away for his son Kurt’s wedding in 2009.  The result?  A 2-1 victory over the Houston Dynamo on July 11 at CenturyLink Field.

Kickoff is scheduled for 6 pm Pacific with national television coverage on ESPN.  It is Fan Appreciation Night and fans are encouraged to arrive early for festivities in and around the stadium.
