Portland signs Valeri as third Designated Player
The Portland Timbers added their third Designated Player on Thursday, announcing the signing of Argentine midfielder Diego Valeri on loan from Lanus.
Valeri, 26, has 26 goals in 158 appearances in Argentina’s first division and has also spent two loan stints with Porto in Portugal and Almeria in Spain. He joins a midfield that already features Darlington Nagbe, Franck Songo’o, captain Jack Jewsbury, fellow Designated Player Diego Chara and the newly acquired Will Johnson.
Portland’s other Designated Player is forward Kris Boyd, though the club indicated in a press conference this week that he may not be in their plans for the 2013 season. Forward Jose Adolfo Valencia was initially announced as a Designated Player when he signed last season, but terms of his contract were renegotiated when it was learned that Valencia came to the club with a torn ACL and would not be able to play in the 2012 season.
The Sounders will meet the Timbers on March 16 and August 25 at CenturyLink Field and October 13 at Portland’s Jeld-Wen Field.
