MLS teams getting defensive with acquisitions
Three teams added defensive help on Thursday, with the New England Revolution and Colorado Rapids going international in their new signings while the Columbus Crew picked up former Sounders FC left back Tyson Wahl.
The Rapids added Ecuadorian center back Diego Calderon after the 26-year-old spent most of his pro career with LDU Quito in Ecuador. The move comes after the Rapids lost seven defenders from the 2012 squad in an overhaul of their back line. Calderon has five appearances for Ecuador on the international level and 210 appearances for LDU Quito since singing in 2005.
New England, meanwhile, turned to Europe to sign 27-year-old Portuguese center back Jose Goncalves on loan from FC Sion in Switzerland. Goncalves has played for nine clubs since turning pro in 2002, never playing more than the 58 matches over four seasons for Hearts in Scotland.
Finally, the Crew added Wahl after a tumultuous 2012 season that saw him play 11 matches with the Montreal Impact before a trade to the Rapids in midseason. After the trade, he played just four matches in Colorado before his option was declined after the season. In seven MLS seasons, Wahl played 86 matches, including 39 goals in three seasons with the Sounders FC.
