Long reach of Hurricane Sandy affects Sounders

Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc up and down the east coast over the past several days, but the effects of the hurricane have been felt across the country.

The Sounders have several players with ties to the east coast, including goalkeeper Bryan Meredith, whose Monmouth University campus was used as a shelter for displaced hurricane victims and evacuees and the school was closed down on Monday and Tuesday.

Meredith is now relieved to learn that nobody he knows was harmed by the hurricane, but he is still not clear about what he will see when he returns to Scotch Plains, New Jersey, in the off-season.

“I honestly don’t know what to expect.  Some of my friends have sent me pictures of trees that fell into houses around my town.  Hopefully they can get it cleaned pretty fast and they can get on with things,” said Meredith, 23.  “Luckily most of the people I know haven’t been dealing with too much.  Mostly just fallen trees and power outages.  Everybody at my college was evacuated and that’s a little bit nerve-wracking.  But now that it’s over with and everyone I know is safe and unharmed, it’s a bit relieving.”

Meredith wasn’t alone in Seattle’s locker room.  Midfielder Mike Seamon and defender Jeff Parke both had school closed at their colleges, as well, with Villanova and Drexel both cancelling classes this week to allow students and staff to safely evacuate.

The Sounders are doing their part to help victims of Hurricane Sandy.

The American Red Cross will have volunteers at the match Friday collecting CASH donations to help with the disaster relief efforts.

There is also a texting campaign: Text “REDCROSS” to 90999 for a $10 donation.

Kickoff is slated for 7 pm Pacific and gates will open at 5:30.
