Loan offers opportunities for the Sounders and Montero
Included in the news that the Sounders FC had loaned star forward Fredy Montero to Millonarios in Colombia was the note that prior to the loan, the Sounders and Montero agreed to a multi-year contract extension.
This piece was pivotal to the loan for the Sounders and was explained by owner and general manager Adrian Hanauer at training on Monday.
“There are two parts to that. A player’s transfer value is always relating to the existing contract. Fredy only had two more years left in his current contract,” Hanauer said. “And second we see a world where Fredy could be back in Seattle and we wanted to put ourselves in position to have that happen someday if it works out that way.”
Though he said it was too early to indicate a scenario that would see Montero back in Seattle, the move, he said, was designed to help Montero get back into the pool for the Colombian National Team.
“It gives him a chance to be a little closer to the national team pool and gives him the possibility of being seen and back on the radar there,” Hanauer said.
