LA to host Western Conference final on Sunday

The Sounders FC will take the field at 7 pm Pacific on Thursday to face Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium, but they were glued to their television screens on Wednesday when the San Jose Earthquakes hosted the LA Galaxy in the second leg of their Western Conference semifinal series.

There, the Galaxy put on a dominating performance to bulldoze San Jose 3-1 to advance to the Western Conference final with a 3-2 win on aggregate.

Robbie Keane scored twice and Mike Magee added the third as the defending MLS Cup champions toppled the 2012 Supporters’ Shield winners.

With that win, the Galaxy will host the winner of the Seattle-Salt Lake matchup on Sunday in the first leg of the Western Conference final.

In the Eastern Conference, the fifth-seeded Houston Dynamo held on to top Sporting Kansas City to advance to the conference final for the second straight season.  After winning the first leg 2-0 in Houston, the Dynamo allowed one goal to KC, but Sporting could not find the equalizer and Houston advanced with a 2-1 win on aggregate.

In the other matchup, the New York Red Bulls were scheduled to host DC United, but inclement weather forced a postponement of that match.  The first leg ended in a 1-1 draw at RFK Stadium, with both goals coming off of own goals.  The match has been rescheduled for a 4:30 pm Pacific kickoff on Thursday on NBC Sports.
