LA adds veteran Italian keeper

Seemingly each season over the last few years, Brad Friedel is rumored to be making a move back to MLS, where he played in 1996 and 1997 as a brief stop between trips to Europe.

However, this winter his backup at Tottenham, Carlo Cudicini will be making the move to the US, signing with the LA Galaxy to solidify the goalkeeper position for the two-time defending MLS Cup champions as they transition out of the David Beckham era.

Cuducini was Chelsea’s top goalkeeper from 2000-2004 before being supplanted by Petr Cech with the arrival of Jose Mourinho prior to the 2004-2005 season.  The Italian keeper would eventually make a move to Tottenham, where he made just 20 appearances over three and a half seasons.

He replaces Josh Saunders, who was between the pipes for both of LA’s championships, going 28-9-8 with a 1.17 goals against average in his 46 league appearances.  In the playoffs, he posted a 0.80 GAA with an 8-2-0 record and three shutouts.

The Galaxy also selected former Columbus Crew goalkeeper Will Hesmer in the Stage 2 Re-Entry draft.
