Honduras suffers first loss in 7 months
Honduras suffered their first loss in international play since June 8, 2012, on Sunday, leaving them just short of the Copa Centroamericana title with a 1-0 defeat to Costa Rica in the tournament final in San Jose, Costa Rica.
Sounders FC midfielder Mario Martinez made his fourth start in four matches for Honduras in the tournament, as they allowed a goal by Geancarlo Gonzalez in the 38th minute and could never find the equalizer.
In the tournament, Honduras finished with 1-1 draws in their two group stage matches, then topped Belize 1-0 in the semifinal before falling to Costa Rica.
Honduras last loss on June 8 at their home stadium in San Pedro Sula in a World Cup qualifier against Panama. Since then, they went 4-0-4 in World Cup qualifying matches and the Copa Centroamericana until Sunday’s loss to Costa Rica.
Their next match will be their Hexagonal round match against the US National Team on February 6 in San Pedro Sula.
