Hahnemann highlights Super Bowl Sunday training

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – It’s Super Bowl Sunday at Sounders FC training camp, but that didn’t stop them from putting in a hard day’s work in their morning session.

After a warmup, the team was split into two groups, with one playing 7v8 on one end of the field and the other doing crossing and finishing with plastic defenders set up in the box as a diversion.

The 7v8 featured a goalkeeper on the defensive team.  The offense would try to score at one end while it was the defenses task to take the ball under control to midfield to get credit for the stop.

While the day produced some highlights, the greatest one came on the final shot of the session.  After the field players finished their work on the field, they moved to an adjacent field for some fitness work while the goalkeepers finished by fielding crosses served by goalkeeper coach Tom Dutra and they turned it into a competition.

“We were playing a little competition, doing crosses.  I would lay up some balls for the boys to try and finish on each other and whoever had the most goals would have to serve the others at lunch,” Dutra said.  “We’re getting to the point where a little bit of fun is a good thing, but we’re still doing work.”

On the final ball of the session, Dutra played it in from the right side and Marcus Hahnemann skied for an overhead bicycle kick from 15 yards out on the far side, clipping it off the bottom of the crossbar and in for a goal.

It led to some oohs and ahs from the rest of the group, as well as some jokes from the coaches and teammates, and Dutra was able to have a laugh about it afterward.

“It took 39 tries to finally get one of frame, but the one he chose to get on frame was a pretty special shot,” he said.  “I don’t know if he’s ever moved like that to get a ball on frame, but it really proves what kind of athlete he is.”

The Sounders will take the afternoon off to watch the Super Bowl and return to training at Grande Sports World on Monday morning for their final training session of the trip.  They meet the Portland Timbers on Tuesday before returning to Seattle later that afternoon.
