Estrada highlights 11v11 scrimmage

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. – The intensity is picking up at Sounders FC training camp at Grande Sports World.  On Saturday evening the club took to the field for an 11v11 scrimmage with the coaches paying particular attention to some of the younger players and tested players in different positions as they get ready for the first preseason match of the year on Tuesday against the Portland Timbers.

David Estrada continued his hot preseason with a goal in the sixth minute of the first half.  Leo Gonzalez played a ball into the box to Alex Caskey and Caskey took on goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann before playing to Estrada for a tap-in.

Babayele Sodade nearly equalized a minute later, but his shot from the left side headed for the top corner was parried over the bar by Michael Gspurning.

In the 12th minute, Dylan Remick went on a run up the left side and crossed a ball to Phillip Lund, but his shot was saved by Gspurning.

Going the other direction, Travis Bowen led Estrada up the right side, but his shot was tipped by Hahnemann and hit off the post and away for a corner kick.

There were some second-half lineup changes, with some notable alterations being Remick moving from left back to right back and Mason Trafford moving from center back to left back on one side while Eriq Zavaleta went in at forward on the other squad.

The only score of the second half came on a misplayed ball in the back that wound up in the back of the net for an own goal.

There were some offensive highlights, but none resulted in goals.  In the 33rd minute, Lamar Neagle found Bowen in the box, but Bowen’s right-footed shot skipped just wide of the net.  In the 40th minute, Bowen clipped a left-footed shot just wide, though he continued to get into dangerous attacking positions.

In the final moments of the 40-minute scrimmage, Estrada crossed a long ball from the right side and Neagle crashed in from the left wing for a lunging header, but he got just under it and pushed it over the crossbar and the scrimmage finished with a 1-1 draw.

The Sounders will train in the morning on Sunday before taking the evening off so the team can watch the Super Bowl.
