ECS reigns with tifo displays for 2012
On Tuesday, the Emerald City Supporters’ tifo display for the match against the Portland Timbers was named the league’s top tifo of 2012 by MLSsoccer.com. It continues the ECS tradition of tremendous displays that have many eyes around CenturyLink Field turned toward the Brougham End on the final notes of the national anthem to see what the creative minds of ECS may have conjured for that match.
The Portland match wasn’t the only one that brought about the artistic brilliance from the fans in the south end of the stadium either.
The season opened with tifo displays at two consecutive home matches, starting with the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal matchup against Santos Laguna. With a simple, display of blue and green stripes, the message atop the section read, “Let our voices lift you.” And they did just that, as the Sounders topped Santos 2-1 in the first leg of the series.

Then came the MLS regular season opener against Toronto FC with a larger display paying homage to the diversity of the club with a flag from each country represented on the Sounders roster over the tagline “E Pluribus Sounders” (Out of many, Sounders). Seattle would again come out victorious, 3-1.

In July, the Sounders supporters paid tribute to Zach Scott’s ten years in Seattle with a surfing-themed display depicting Scott riding on waves on the bottom of the display (on a Brek Shea surfboard, no less) and headed by the words “Hanging ten for the Sounders.” Seattle won that match, 2-1.

In August, they took their display game on the road, presenting a boxing-themed tifo overhead before the US Open Cup final that featured a championship belt with each of Seattle’s three Open Cup trophies. Seattle would draw Kansas City 1-1 in the match, but fall in the penalty kick shootout to narrowly miss hoisting the Open Cup for the fourth straight year.
Against Vancouver, ECS recognized the club’s 2011 Cascadia Cup championship with their display.

That’s just a taste of the ECS tifo displays from 2012. It will be interesting to see what they have in store for 2013 … the season opens March 2 against the Montreal Impact.
