Draw has Martinez and Honduras fighting for Gold Cup chance
As the Sounders FC prepare to open training camp on Monday, midfielder Mario Martinez is preparing for a crucial game in the Copa Centroamericana in San Jose, Costa Rica.
Honduras will need a win on Tuesday against Panama to ensure themselves of a berth in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in July. In their first match of the tournament, they got on the board in the 75th minute on a goal by New England Revolution forward Jerry Bengtson, but allowed the 77th minute equalizer and drew 1-1 with El Salvador.
Martinez played 85 minutes on a Honduras team that included Bengtson, Houston Dynamo midfielder Boniek Garcia and San Jose Earthquakes defender Victor Bernardez.
After their match on Tuesday, the seeding for the final round will be determined and Honduras will learn their opponent either for the semifinals or the fifth place game. The top two teams in each group and the winner of the fifth place game will all move on to the Gold Cup.
