Dallas inks Peruvian goalkeeper

Michael Gspurning knows all about stepping into big shoes with a new team and Raul Fernandez is about to learn the same lesson.

The Peruvian National Team goalkeeper was signed Thursday by FC Dallas to replace Kevin Hartman, the league’s all-time leader in most goalkeeping statistics.

Fernandez, 27, started his career with Universitario in Peru in 2005 and played there until moving to Nice in France in 2010.  He did have one loan spell with Peru’s Sport Ancash in 2006 and was loaned back to Universitario by Nice in 2011.

Over the last two years, he has become the regular starting goalkeeper for Peru and has 21 caps since making his debut in 2008.

Hartman, 38, went 9-11-10 in 30 starts with FC Dallas last year.  It was his third season with Dallas and 16th in Major League Soccer.  He is the league’s all-time leader in wins (180), shutouts (112) and games played (416).  He has not yet signed with another team in MLS.
