14 taken in Re-Entry; Sounders pass
Movement around Major League Soccer continued on Friday with the Stage 2 Draft of the Re-Entry Process as 14 players changed teams. However, the Sounders opted to pass in the draft and none of their former players were selected.
Toronto FC started things off by selecting Danny Califf with the first overall pick, the center back who was key building block for the Philadelphia Union since their expansion season in 2010 before he was sent to Chivas USA in a midseason trade in 2012. Califf, 32, will bring a veteran presence to a Toronto backline that features two Homegrown players under age 22.
Another highlight was the Union selecting forward Conor Casey, who would provide a great partner for the recently-acquired Sebastien Le Toux. Casey, 31, has 50 goals in 121 career MLS matches over six MLS seasons, but totaled just 32 matches in the last two years because of injuries.
The LA Galaxy traded their first round pick in the 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft and an international slot for the 2013 season to swap picks with Chivas USA and selected former Houston midfielder Colin Clark and former Columbus goalkeeper Will Hesmer. Clark, 28, has 15 goals and 13 assists over 127 MLS matches. After posting four goals and three assists in his first full season with the Dynamo in 2011, he started just six matches in his 14 appearances in 2012. Hesmer, meanwhile, came to the Crew in 2007 and earned the starting role under then-head coach Sigi Schmid. He went on to win MLS Cup in 2008 and post 41 shutouts in 130 starts with Columbus over five seasons, but missed the entire 2012 season because of a hip injury.
After the draft, the Galaxy traded striker Edson Buddle to the Rapids in exchange for allocation money and Colorado’s first round pick in the 2013 Supplemental Draft. Buddle, who returned from Germany in 2012 to join the defending MLS Cup champion Galaxy, had three goals in 19 appearances in 2012. In 2008 and 2010, he had 15 goals and 17 goals, respectively, totaling 93 goals in 250 MLS matches in his career. He will join Omar Cummings in Colorado to try to regain his high-scoring form.
The San Jose Earthquakes picked three players in defenders Dan Gargan and Ty Harden, a UW product, and midfielder Bryan Jordan.
Others who changed hands in the draft included Chad Barrett and Hunter Freeman going to the New England Revolution, Eric Avila going to the Rapids, Stephen Keel going from New York to FC Dallas, Paulo Jr. moving from Real Salt Lake to the Vancouver Whitecaps FC, while Salt Lake picked up Lovel Palmer and John Thorrington went to DC United.
